Paul Gillingham - Success Story

Name:
Paul Gillingham

Age:
29

Occupation:
Personal Trainer/Founder of Boxfit Academy

Sporting Background:
My main sport has always been football which I have played since I was 7. I played County league football for 10 years but then gave it up due to injury and also to concentrate on my career within the fitness industry. I also like to play tennis, x-country running and working out in the gym with the Kettlebells!

Years in the Fitness Industry:
3.5 years. I completed my Diploma in Personal Training in November 2005

What you like about the fitness industry:
There is so much variation and so many different ways to train. Its good to go away on new courses and learn new skills and then have the confidence and background knowledge to put those new skills into a training session.
I love being able to help people change their way of living and their lifestyle. You get to build up a very close relationship with the clients and its great to see them making strides towards their goals, seeing them develop and progress. Every day is different and each client gives me a different outlook and a new challenge to take on.

What you dislike about the fitness industry:
That too many trainers are quick to give out the same standard programme without actually doing the background knowledge on the individuals needs.
I also think that a lot of trainers are too scared to experiment with their own knowledge and tend to copy standard practices. One of my biggest pet hates is that people think that they need to spend hours in the gym wasting pointless time on a x-trainer in order to burn fat. Its not about how much time you spend in the gym its the quality of work you put into the time given.

Company/business profile background:
I have been Personal Training now for over 3 years and have set up and very strong client base. I have been based at K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley since it opened in November 2005 and have progressed quite rapidly into a very confident and established PT. I have decided that now is a great time to set up on my own as I am very passionate about helping people achieve their goals with a fast and effective approach. The reason for setting up the Academy is that through gaining new skills on the Performance Boxing course through Optimal Life Fitness, I have learnt quick and effective ways in which to help people achieve their goals in a group or on a individual basis.

What your company does:
The Boxfit Academy has been set up to teach people how to exercise in a safe and effective manner using Boxing as a means of exercising. Its been proven to be a great stress reliever and has already benefited many people. I've broken it down into 4 main categories so we can cater for everyone.
These are:
Boxfit - The Class. This is a general Boxing based class aimed at anyone over the age of 16 who wants to get fit, tone up and relieve some stress Junior Boxfit - These will be circuit based classes aimed at children from as young as 5 to come along and have some fun on the punch bag!
Corporate Boxfit - These classes will be designed solely for people in the workplace to improve team building and stress relief.
Post Natal Boxfit - This specially designed class is aimed at new mums wanting to loose that extra baby weight.

As well as the above I'm running 5 week introductory courses on demand to prepare people who want to attend these classes.

What is your role in the company:
It was my idea to set the company up, so I suppose I can be known as the 'founder'. However, my passion is actually the hands on approach and working with the clients so I would like to say my main role in this venture, seeing that is a Boxing based organisation would be 'Head Coach'!!

Where would you see yourself and you company in 1 year, 5 years?:
My aim for the company would be to get as many people of all ages into physical activity as I can. I plan on visiting every local school, college, hospital, Doctors surgery and large health and fitness centres to demonstrate what we do at the academy. My long term plan would be to make the Boxfit Academy widely known as a provider of Boxing excellence and a fun and effective way of achieving goals including as many individuals as possible.

Which Optimal Life Fitness Courses have you participated in:
I was on the very first Extreme Kettlebell Course you guys put on way back in 2006 and have been using the kettlebells ever since. I would say that the kettlebell is the single most powerful and adaptable tool in the fitness industry.
I have also been on the Performance Boxing course earlier this year and it was from that course I had the inspiration to set up the Boxfit Academy.

What did you enjoy about the course(s):
If I could sum it up in 1 word it would be 'professional'. Both the courses that I have been on with OLF have been so worth while and I have gained so much knowledge and experience. They make the courses fun, enjoyable but also are very serious and knowledgeable with their teaching methods. Its all about going back to basics and breaking things down which I believe is so important if you are to master a new skill or technique.

Have the courses benefited you or your business in anyway:

Massively!! I use the kettlebells every day with my training and combine them with a lot of high intensity body weight training. As said before, kettlebells in my opinion are the single most powerful tool within the industry.
Although I gained so much from the EKI course, it has been the Performance Boxing course that stands out for me. I have been on many different Boxing based courses since becoming a PT but nothing compares to the course that is run by OLF. Having never boxed in my life I've always liked the look of using boxing as a means of keeping fit, so to go on a course which was being taught by an ex world champion Stevie Smith was too good an opportunity to turn down. I learnt so much from it, and it has helped me to set up a business that I know will be a massive success.

Thanks for that Paul, it's great to see that you're boxing academy has taken off so quickly, I know the last time we spoke your classes were all fully booked so you must be doing the right things!

No problem, I will keep you posted on the developments
